Re: Had my appt, here's my 'update' -- LONG replyFrom: Anon. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 3 Aug 2001 14:18:53 -0500 (CDT)
Oh Honey -- I hear where you're at! First, let me say that NOBODY should be expected to survive on 1000 calories a day. From all I've read and been told, unless strictly ordered and OBSERVED/monitored by a dietician, 1200 cal/day is as low as you should go -- otherwise, you eat up all your muscle and get exhausted. Your body goes into starvation mode, and from there, it's insanely difficult to get it back to proper digestion. Second, I'm so sorry that your doctor is being so unhelpful with the exhaustion and the weight gain. I've been (and still am) there with you. Mine keeps telling me (over and over) that "people always underestimate how much they eat and overestimate how much they exercise" -- that is, I'm obviously not trying hard enough and therefore it's my fault. Then again, she wants me on a 1200 cal/day diet and walking 12 HOURS a week...that I know I wouldn't survive. Point being, frustrated doctors use the maxima and minima of the exercise/food scale -- they can see that you're not losing weight, they're stumped, and therefore it's you who's at fault. Ha. Even when I wrote a diet/exercise diary and brought it in to her, she wouldn't look at it. It's NOT your fault. Something's gone wrong with your metabolism (personally, I think you're eating too little), and your body is craving and conserving every little calorie it can -- therefore, no matter how much you exercise, you'll either stay steady or even gain weight -- in fact, the more you exercise while eating that little, the more panicked your body gets about storing reserves... As for the meat/money conundrum, I've solved it with one magic ingrediant: Beans. They're cheap, healthy, yummy, and both low carb and low on the glycemic index. And there are so many varieties and so many styles of cooking you can use! I would say Definitely Don't give up and go for the stomach stapling thing. That's ONLY for people who can't control their appetite -- you're eating only 1000 (or, now, 1200) calories a day! And low carbing it! All that food won't come anywhere near to filling up your stomach, so the staple would be useless. So. What are your options? If I were in your shoes, I would take the doctor up on the 1200 cal/day diet and maybe go for longer walks (even if it means going less often). I have knee problems, too, so I know how hard it is to get the proper amount of exercise in...have you thought about switching around? Bike one day, walk the next, jump rope (I know, the knee, but you get the idea) the third, etc.? It might make it all more rewarding... Above all, don't forget that you have friends here -- friends who, even if they don't have your precise problems, understand and empathize with you. Stay strong, and when you need propping up, we'll all be here with and for you! A.
