Hi Emma:

The thing that worked with my current doctor was going to the PubMed site (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed) and searching for +metformin +PCOS. I would estimate that over 80% of the articles -- from peer-reviewed journals, not some possibly biased Web site -- that came up recommended the use of metformin to treat PCOS. I printed a sample of the abstracts and faxed them to my doctor. If you have a fax number, I can even fax you the same sheets I sent her. She said that she had read some of them but not all of them, and then she agreed that I could have a prescription for bloodwork and an ultrasound -- both of which eventually proved that I have PCOS. I am now being treated after almost three years of dithering about trying to prove to several doctors in succession that I'm not fat (etc.) because I eat too much and don't exercise. If there's anything else with which I can help you, let me know!
