Confirmation and clarification

I have officially been diagnosed with PCOS after almost 3 years of doctors' visits. I have been given a prescription for metformin. My question is this: I know that it is intended to help with the insulin resistance, for which I need it, but does it have any other positive side effects? I believe I have read postings saying that it slowed the growth of facial/body hair and halted or reversed the progression of hair loss. Is this common? Is it something I can look forward to? Being diagnosed is a great thing, and finally being able to be actively treated is a better one, so I won't be disappointed if insulin control is "all" metformin can do for me -- I'm just curious about the other aspects of this syndrome.

Thanks for any help.
