Re: Avandia - Long.From: Michelle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 5 Jul 2001 01:15:46 -0500 (CDT)
OK, couple of things, Anon. You said that you aren't IR but that your doctor wants you on Avandia. Do you have a positive diagnosis of PCOS? IR is what *causes* PCOS. Before you go taking a medication, find out from your doctor exactly what he is treating and what his objective is. I understand that your weight is a big issue for you but you can't possibly be so narrow minded and shallow that you would jeapordize your health, right? You wouldn't want to ignore the long term health risks that go along with this disorder, right? Besides, if you have been diagnosed with PCOS, you should be low-carbing anyways since our bodies can't effectively breakdown and use Carbohydrates like most people can. So, that would help balance any possible weight gain side effects from medication, correct? As Dona mentioned, there are several different drugs, and your doctor should be explaining them ALL to you... the differences in how they work, the advantages and disadvantages. I don't know much about Avandia. I am on Actos and like it. My body reacts well to it, no ugly side effects and I even managed to lose weight (which is nice since this is a drug that sometimes causes weight gain). Glucophage (or Metformin, same thing) has been known to assist in weight loss but it also has some really bad gastrointestinal side effects. Good luck.
