Jennifer, apnea means "without breath." Sleep apnea is a disorder in which you hold your breath during sleep. It is often accompanied by an obstruction in the airway, and may be accompanied by snoring, but not always.

There are other sleep disorders besides sleep apnea, and medication can disrupt your sleep. There is a lot of info on the web about sleep disorders. Here is one site: http://www.sleepnet.com/
