Jane, This is just my humble opinion, but I would say "no." From what you said, it sounds like he is desparately seeking a label.

Your doc should do an ultrasound to look for cysts or signs that you have had cysts. If your hormone levels were normal, were they in the right proportions? PCOS is caused by insulin resistance, so usually something can be seen in the blood work. Even if IR hasn't shown up in you yet, perhaps he sees a pattern in your family medical history? Do you carry your weight in your belly (apple-shaped)?

Read up on PCOS. If you don't think you fit the profiles, ask your doc if the irregular periods was the ONLY reason you got the dx of PCOS.
