2-HOUR GLUCOSE TEST???From: Carolyne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 23 Jun 2001 14:30:20 -0500 (CDT)
Hello ladies. How are you all doing? I am having a 2-hour glucose tolerance test this coming week. I had to request it myself to my primary care physician. I was wondering if anyone knows the exact procedure for how this test should be administered? Also, what sort of diet to follow prior to being tested, and what time of day gives the most accurate results? Reason being is that I have had 2 ACTH stimulation tests in the past. (This is where they test your adrenal glands.) And I have gotten 2 totally different results. With the first test, my endo gave specific directions to the nurse at my HMO, saying that the test MUST be administered IV, and not IM. (IM was the standard way for my HMO to administer it. (IV= In Vein; IM= In Muscle) When we did the test this way, (IV) my results were that I definitely had Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia. No question. Anyway, due to other issues, (PCOS + treatment) I went and got a second opinion. The 2nd doctor ordered the ACTH stim. test again ... but didn't give any special instructions to my HMO ... so they did it IM, (which hurt, and also made me extremely sick) and the results came back that my adrenals were pretty much normal. I don't understand how there could be such a drastic difference in the results, but there were. And that is what I believe to have caused it. Anyway, three's a charm, so I am going to have the test done again. Hopefully it will be the most accurate. So, I am very worried about the 2 hour glucose screening test. I want to find out the most accurate information about this test from the experts (sadly, not my doctor--yet anyway) and exactly how it should be done. Also, is their a significance between a 3 hour screening and a 2 hour screening? Because I now know that my HMO offers a 3 hour one, so I would like to know if I should request that one instead. Thank you. Take care to you all. *Carolyne*
