Hi Lauren

It's horrendous, isn't it? I find that the hair loss affects me even more than the weight gain. I used to have glorious hair and now it is short and straggly, but at least it is no longer falling out!!

I believe I have had PCOS all my life, but before I had children my high levels of exercise kept the worst of the symptoms at bay. I was very overweight but very very fit and so I think that sort of staved it off for a while. But now I have children, and cannot do as much sport, I have been severely affected.

Anyway, I have found that my hair loss tends to go in cycles, although I feel down about it all the time as it looks awful even when it isn't falling out as it hardly grows at all and is always sort of 'in-between' styles!! I am obese, which upsets me a lot, have facial hair and excesssive body hair, mild acne, and am constantly exhausted. But it is my hair that upsets me the most, self-esteem wise. So I really do know how you feel.

The best I can suggest is this - don't mess about with it by coloring or perming it. Keep your style simple and try to grow it, so, if you get bald patches (as I did), you can pin your hair up with simple combs in such a way as to cover the patches. I'd recommend not having a fringe (called bangs in the US, I think). Also, you could try wearing a hat - I did all through the winter here when I was patchy and my hair was very short as it had to be cut off (went like straw!).

If it gets really bad then you could perhpas try a wig, but I'm pretty sure it won't get that far. You will probably find that it will start to grow back in a few months. Since I have been taking Metformin my scalp hair loss has stopped but I cannot say with certainty that it will stay that way.

I know it is truly terrible to go through this and I sympathise. I hope my comments are helpful in some way.
