Jennifer, You'll want to do your own research, but from what I've been reading, you can have few or many of the characteristics and still be diagnosed with PCOS.

My medical profile showed PCOS indications (family members with diabetes; family members who are overweight and have lipid problems; irregular periods; some acne; difficulty with weight control; hair on breasts). I think the big one is the irregular periods. I don't have the acantharsis nigrans.

My blood work always shows my hormones to be in the normal range. That was the case this time, too, although he said my insulin was high but not diabetic.

I think the doctor (RE) thought I was going to be a classic case to show his resident. When he did a transvaginal ultrasound, I only had a couple of cysts, so he said that the "literature" states you don't have to have all the symptoms to have insulin-resistant PCOS.

Learn as much as you can, and get a referral to a reproductive endocrinologist if you can. I think if you took a survey, you'd find a variety of symptoms from person to person.

--LF PS: I'm up at 4 AM because I increased my metformin dosage yesterday, and I had a diarrhea attack this morning. I have patience, however, and I know my system will settle down again in a few days. LF
