Re: Why BCPs? Whats the reasoning?From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 23 May 2001 01:32:36 -0500 (CDT)
Many doctors prescribe the BCP as a sort of "quick fix" for PCOS as it helps in masking our symptoms: While on it you have regular menses, and it apparently helps the acne and hair growth. (I say apparently, it didn't for me!) As is often pointed out here, of course it does nothing to correct the endocrine problem that is causing those symptoms. But if a woman comes into her doctor's office looking for relief from, say, irregular periods and acne, the pill looks at first glance like a good option to "solve" both problems. It was the standard first line of treatment for PCOS for many many years. There's nothing wrong with taking bcp's, I doubt they hurt you and probably help in a lot of cases. But they don't really solve anything either, just make it easier to live with. HTH, Sonnet
