Re: BC's and antibiotic MinocyclineFrom: Christa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 22 May 2001 22:52:50 -0500 (CDT)
Dear Anonymous- Your daughter can take antibiotics for her acne along with the BCPs. She should know that taking the antibiotics will decrease the BCPs effectiveness for preventing pregnancy. As long as you use another form of contraception while taking the antibiotics, there's no need to worry. There's a good book you may want to take out of the library called: The Good News About Women's Hormones. The author explains all these things. He has a whole section on androgen disorders (like PCOS) and different treatments for various symptoms. I myself have suffered with acne due to PCOS. I have been on various antibiotics over the years just to control the outbreaks in addition to other treatments. While taking the antibiotics I have also taken BCPs, not necessarily for contraception but more to treat my hormone imbalance. The real treatment everybody is getting now is for the underlying problem of insulin resistance which women who have PCOS suffer from. You may want to ask your daughter's doctor about an insulin sensitizer as well. Hope this helps you.
