Air Travel! Eeek! But I made it.

I just made it back from my best friend's wedding! I flew from California there and back. I can't believe I missed like a whole 48 hours of this board. I know that is sooo awfully sad but this is my home base, I never am away that long!

Anyway for those of you dealing with the whole weight / size and flying issue:

I was horribly nervous about flying this trip, even though it's a short flight, no more than 2 hours. I am a big girl, size 32 these days, and all that weight in my tummy and hips. I flew both ways Southwest, because they had awfully cheap fares. I considered at first buying two seats, but I didn't really want to. I called up their customer service number and a VERY kind manager spoke to me and said don't bother to spend that much extra, we can find a way of making sure you are next to an empty seat. I said okay, but then I panicked for a long time!

Well both flights the attendants were SO kind and nice and fun, I couldn't have asked for better. Very helpful, very respectful, my size wasn't even an issue. They were discreet and generous with their seatbelt extenders. Both times they indicated to me that I would be most comfortable in the front row, and they would be able to pay special attention to me there, so I gave it a shot. This was a small plane, seated about 200 I think (the kind with one row down the middle and three seats on either side) and the front row is turned backwards, so you have lounge seating there. They directed me to the outside seat in the front, backwards facing row. The leg room is not fabulous, especially with a full flight (both were,) but that row is missing one seat. So if you sit on the "window" seat you have almost a full seat-space empty next to you. The armrests go up and wah-lah, you've got all the room you could ask for. I was VERY comfortable, and my hips are something like 65" around. Big! I also saw, on the flight back, a woman sitting in the same seat as I was across the plane, and she was a great deal bigger than even I am - I would guess 400+ lbs. And she looked comfortable too!

Bottom line for me: Maybe I caught them on particularly good trips, but they were NICE, respectful, very willing to help me feel as comfortable as possible, assured me that I have just as much right to a nice flight as the next person, and I was as relaxed and comfy on those flights as I am now sitting in front of the computer. All for the lowest fares I could find. This isn't a paid endorsement or anything :) I just thought you might appreciate the tip off!

Now I am going to get some SLEEP, which I did not do last night due to dancing! Who wants to come rub my feet??? :)
