Re: Who thinks environmental poisoning is behind the epidemic of PCOS??From: paula (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 13 May 2001 22:19:35 -0500 (CDT)
PCOS is believed to be genetic.it runs in families, and i believe its genetic as well. Therefore it is not something you can just "get." you either have it genetically, or you dont. However, that doesn't preclude an environmental factor. It is possible that environmental poisons and pollutants, along with a less than preferable lifesyle/diet has caused point mutations on our DNA. I also believe this is true. On the other hand though, we also have to take into consideration that medical advances are enabling us to link things together that we previously would not have, also as communication gets easier and easier, more cases are being reported. i think that PCOS is definately more common now than it was say, 70 years ago, but i also think that it is more readily diagnosed now as well. love, paula
