I'm on 2000 Mg Glucophage XR/day. My doctor had me on 500 Mg a day for about a month and now I've worked my way up to the 2000 Mg. Perhaps that is what you're doctor is doing. 500 Mg is very low and most studies have shown that it is ineffective if the dose is under 1500 Mg/day.
