i am not going to argue about the possible side effects of provera. i will tell you that i have been taking provera on and off since i was 15 years old, and i have never experienced ANY of the side effects listed (with the possible technical excpetion of "changes in menstrual flow" but you should consider i took provera specifically to change my menstrual flow, from nothing to something.) the simple fact is, most people do NOT experience these side effects. and you still didn't deny the fact that herbal medications cause unwanted side effects as well. anything we put in our bodies that is not "original material", ie..something made by our own biological functions, is going to have side effects.

now, i didn't say that FDA tested drugs are perfect and harmless. of course there are meds that make it through and then turn out to be nasty. but if you take into consideration how many drugs the FDA approves each year, simple statistics will tell you that some of them are going to be recalled. the FDA isn't perfect, but its better than taking something that is not fully examined, at least imo. whether herbal remedies are tested in Europe or not is inconsequential for my decisions. first, i dont live in Europe, and second their medical standards are different than the ones in the US. and the fact that they have been used for hundreds of years, or even thousands of years (in China specifically) is somewhat irrelevant as well, we are exposed to all different kinds of enviromental toxins now that we weren't then, and our diets, which really affect the metabolism of all medications, herbal or otherwise, is substantially different. we have to consider what these herbs will do in our current bodies, not the bodies of our ancestors. that is a matter of simple biology.

you said "but without meds I have decreased the acne, the facial hair, the depression, the mood swings, created a 26 day cycle out of a very irregular one, now ovulate on CD 13, balanced my blood sugar levels, and much more. " however, i have to tell you, it doesn't matter what drugs you take, herbal or otherwise, or how many hours you stay seated in a yoga position meditating to find your inner peace, none of that can change your DNA structure. when you find a herbal medication that can change and manipulate the amino acids in our DNA base chains, and that can then subsequently transfer that new DNA strand to every cell in our bodies thereby replacing the damaged insulin receptor and turning us into PCOS-free women, please let me know. until then, i believe that i have made a well researched and mature decision, dispite your claims to the contrary.

I think its wonderful you have had such great succcess controlling your symptoms, but you did not do it without medications. herbs are drugs, just the same way met is a drug. By defination a drug is :A substance used in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of a disease or as a component of a medication. or Any animal, vegetable, or mineral substance used in the composition of medicines. i am not adding a "toxin" to my body, i am adding provera, a extremely well tested, a much used drug (for a very very long time). provera in case you didn't know it, is actually medoxyprogesterone...do you wonder why its called that? ill tell you. because it is progesterone (same as natural progesterone) with another oxygen molecule hanging on it. now, i dont know about you, but i think that i can handle a little extra oxygen molecules.

i have to compliment you on how well thought your arguement is, however it is still not valid. the fact is, the vast majority of people who take provera do so because they have been given it to induce a period. now, i completely admit that inducing a period is not the best option, having a natural one is. but whether you take natural progesterone cream or provera, either way you are still INDUCING a period.

you have chosen to follow a herbal/holistic route. good for you. but it is as unfair to comdemn tradational medicine as it would be for me to tell you that your herbs are worthless. i think its great you are doing better, but i have been battling PCOS since i was a child. i have researched, and educated myself. i know that what i am taking is the best possible route for me. just as you do not like tradational medications shoved down your throat, i do not like being told i am making an immature decision because i have chosen them. you said "I think that it is a matter of personal responsibility and choices of a mature nature- ones that have been researched and thought out before making- and that goes for the medical OR the natural route." the fact is, many of us are making responsible decisions based on our needs. you are condemning and scoffing at something that has helped thousands of women. i think that you need to consider that herbal remedies and holistic medicine are not the only valid means of treatment available.

love, paula
