Re: Did I do something wrong?From: jodi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 8 May 2001 09:37:38 -0500 (CDT)
hello big cat! :) i don't know what happened with your posts, sometimes posts get swallowed up in the ethernet never to be seen again... or to appear mysteriously 5 days later!!! i am not an especially big person (though i could stand to lose 20 pounds or so) but there ARE lots of obese women with PCOS. overwight is one of the symptoms to look for!!! because PCOS is thought ti stem from Insulin Resistance, and IR makes your body much more efficient than it ought to be at fat storage, well... you do the math. :) basically, the excess insulin in your body makes you really good at fat storage, really bad at fat usage, and it confuses the heck out of your ovaries and pushes them to put out a lot of androgens, ad those are what make all or or most of the PCOS symptoms. one of the medications used to treat PCOS (or rather, the IR aspect of it) is metformin. many, if not most, women experience weight loss while on this medication despite dietary changes, simply because of achieving a more normal metabolism. making dietary/exercise changes plus metformin is an even better way to go, since weight loss on metformin alone seems to level out after 15 pounds or so (i think!). but, don't let that scare you. if you think diets don't work, you are probably right - they DON'T work for us because of the insulin problem. metformin allows us to diet and have results!!!!! and of course, many women find low carbing or modified carbing to work even better at getting the pounds off, since it further keeps insulin levels to a minimum. as for fatigue and depression... many women report a lessening of these symptoms with metformin or other treatments. hope that helps a litle. - jodi
