Re: is ketosis good? - Balance your lifeFrom: Char (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 2 May 2001 18:40:42 -0500 (CDT)
In my opinion, ketosis is bad. I believe your doctors are correct in this opinion. One of the things that happens to your body when in the state of ketosis for a prolonged period is AMMONIA build up. Ammonia is poison to the body. And this is why your kidneys have to work so hard....to destroy the poison, instead of spending time and energy doing what they are supposed to be doing. Also, the BRAIN requires large amounts of glucsose for proper efficient function. Any diet that is out of balance; any diet that you cannot stay on forever; cannot possibly be good. Yes, it's true, that women with our illness need to eat differently, but there is a right way and a wrong way. We still need carbs! The key is WHAT CARBS and WHEN. You want to eat plenty of carbs in addition to a high protein diet, but stick to carbs that do not require the pancreas to secrete large amounts of insulin. Many times I've mentioned on this forum the book called "sugar busters" which was recommended to me by 3 of my doctors. I do not agree with the entire book as I have eliminated caffeine and alcohol completely from my diet, but I do agree with most of it. The key to a successful life is BALANCE. Balance in the way we eat, the amount of wake time and rest we get, balance in our lives re: work, family, fun, and alone time. A lack of any kind of balance may work for awhile, but eventually it tips the scale right over and onto the floor.
