Hi Zowie - I believe the "epilady" was an earlier version of the hair removal unit now sold as the "Braun Silk Epil" - at least it is certainly built on the same principle. My unit has a rotating/revolving head that tweezes the hair. It can be set on fine or coarse and I have had no problem going back and forth between the two. Supposedly the principle is that you start on the coarse setting and as the hair regrows, it is supposed to come in finer - so all you need then is the finer hair setting. I can't say I have noticed any real difference in the texture of the hair that has regrown in any particular area - but others may have seen changes.

As far as pain goes - I think it depends on where you use it and what your previous mans of hair removal was. On my stomach - chest, the feeling is similar to sugaring or plucking (or like removing a band aid in an area with hair). I found that waxing hurt considerably more. And the pain passes momentarily - nothing significant. I suspect it would feel a lot more painful on my legs where all I have ever done is shave. But if you are already waxing or using some other method that removes the hair at the root then you may not feel it nearly as much.

If you want to pursue a purchase then I would suggest doing a search on your web browser for Braun Silk Epil - or even "epilator". I just tried it with just my AOL browser and came up with half a dozen sources including Service Merchandiser. I got mine through QVC and see that they still are carrying various models for sale as well.

Good Luck - please post your opinion on using it if you do get it. I do think it has made some areas of hair removal easier for me, though I finally did decide to go through laser hair removal treatment for my face/chin. It is not fair that the most difficult place to effectively remove coarse hair is also the most visible........ grrrrr.

All the best
