Re: Help! What to do next?From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 30 Apr 2001 03:05:24 -0500 (CDT)
Hi there Jackie! Yes, yes I will be around on ICQ tomorrow, I should think! If not, send me mountains of irritating emails yelling at me! ;) I can understand your frustration and I have to say as a start, the best thing to do is prepare yourself for a doctor not knowing about the connection to IR. I found this over and over. That, or they WILL mention the IR, and just tel you "Well extra fat tissue makes IR worse so lose some weight." This is horrible if you are not prepared to counter it! Bring in lots of literature - copies of medical journals articles and etc. Then you can put them in their face and give them a quick lesson on the physiology of PCOS! A good resource for questions to ask your doctor is http://www.pcosupport.org/pcosinfo/questions.pdf, which can be accessed through the site http://www.pcosupport.org (it is in the beginner's kit.) As to lwo carb diets, they work by reducing the amount of insulin your pancreas is pumping out. When you eat a sugary carbohydrate (or any carb, but especially something like say, choccy - my diet staple!) your blood sugar spikes up and your pancreas responds by pumping out the insulin. This causes many problems for us! So, keeping those carbs to a minimum helps us be healthier. For more info, look in the archives for a paper on Insulin Resistance written by Paula. I'll be thinking happy Doctor thoughts for you! Best of Luck!
