Re: what are the true symptoms of PCOS?From: Char (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 28 Apr 2001 04:01:33 -0500 (CDT)
Don't completely quote me on this, I'm still learning myself. The symptoms related to PCOS usually begin at an early adult age (18-25) and get much worse and more severe as one gets older if not treated. Symptoms could be one or all of the following: 1. Irregular menstraul cycles 2. Male pattern hair growth 3. Male pattern hair loss on head (usually after age 30) 4. High insulin levels or apparent blood sugar problems 5. Chronic Fatigue 6. Weight gain or trouble keep weight steady 7. Brown spots on face 8. Acne 9. Muscle and joint stiffness 10. Water retention and/or constipation 11. High cholesterol and/or triglycerides #'s 5-11 could be a result of improper eating and exercise habits, or other illnesses, especially if #'s 1-4 are not at all present. Proper blood tests include: Testosterone levels, progesterone levels, LH and FSH levels, glucose and insulin levels, and a few other tests I cannot remember offhand. Best doctors to see at first are a gyn and endocrinologist. Be sure they are both familiar with pcos if you think you have it. Hope this helps. And if I missed something, sorry about that.
