Re: Birth Control Pill for Excess Hair GrowthFrom: jodi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 22 Apr 2001 14:40:44 -0500 (CDT)
hi caitlin i was your age when i first knew something wasn't right. i was not able to find a doc who took this seriously until i was 23, though. this is my advice to you. yoou are lucky that you are in canada becuase diane-35 is available there. it is the best BCP for hair growth problems. we don't have it here in the US, so no BCP i ever took did anything for the hair problem. that said, i don't know that even diane-35 on its own is enough. many women find help only when they take the BCP along with an androgen blocker such as aldactone. this attacks the hair on two fronts - the BCP stps the ovary from putting ut so much androgen, the aldactone blocks the effects of the androgens that are there. diane-35 has an anti-androgen built in though so you might not need this. i don't know. the BCP will "regulate" your period. i loathe this term, though, because it really only makes it look like your periods are regular. stop taking the pill and you're back to square one. i liken this to treating a brain tumor with asprin. it's no longer making your head ache... but it's really not a good treatment. most doctors feel that giving a woman regular periods is enough and they don't care to look below the surface at what is wrong. you CAN have PCOS and be normal weight. i'm pretty close to normal weight myself. in 10 years, you might NOT be normal weight because PCOS can blossom oover time like that. definitely find someone who will look into the insulin resistance issue that PCOS is thought to stem from. you will probably have better luck with a good endocrinolgist than with a gynecologist. PCOS is an endocrine disorder, not a gynocological disorder. you don't say what kind of doctor you will be seeing... good luck!! and as somene else said, tell your dooc everything... sorry this is kind of rushed... i'm on my way out the door though. :) - jodi
