Re: spiro questionsFrom: jodi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 17 Apr 2001 14:47:43 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Amy I don't know how spiro has helped with weight loss, but i can tell you a little bit of other stuff about it. it is spironalactone (i think?) and the brand name is aldactone. many people find that you have to use the brand name of this stuff for it to work well. it blocks the effe cts of testosterone on the skin & body and thereby reduces acne, hair, etc. i think it must also do something to the ovaries & cycts and whatnot because after i quit taking it, i had regular periods for a few months... something i never had before. it was wonderful... but it didn't last. (while i was on it unfortunately i had a 3 week long period... a common side effect...) i am going to beg my doc for aldactone this week. well, i probab;y won't have to beg... she wants me on it too. but she wanted me on met alone for a while to see how it worked... and it isn't working, not on the hair at least, not on the periods... no idea what y insulin and other levels are now... i don't know if you get hairy again once you go off aldactone. it seems like if you take it and don't correct the underlying cause of the excess testosterone, you will. it seems like if you do correct this (through met, weight loss, etc) you won't... but i don't know if that's true. maybe once those hair follicles go terminal they stay that way forever, no matter what. i really don't know. i don't know abut weight loss. aldactone is a pottassium sparing diuretic... it was used originally i think for heart and blood pressure problems. it was found to have the added effect of an androgen blocker....i thought the weight you lost on it was fluid... but i don't know. i have read of people experiencing mad weight loss on it... but i really don't know the reasons... hope that helps a little!! i know from experience it is a great drug for the skin effects of testosterone... i don't know about weight loss. - jodi
