I'm new!!! Please read...From: Melanie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 11 Apr 2001 13:17:05 -0500 (CDT)
Hi- I'm new to this forum and it's so refreshing to see that other people are going through exactly the same things that I deal with every day (i.e. I'm not crazy- yeah!). I have a few questions that maybe a few of you can answer...OK, here goes: I was diagnosed w/ PCOS via ultrasound 2 years ago. I always knew something was wrong (lack of period was a pretty big clue), but it took 5 different gyns and one reproductive specialist to figure it out. Same old story for many of you, it seems. Anyway, I feel like I'm constantly battling this "thing" (PCOS)-- missed periods, horrible (and I mean bad) mood swings, hirsuitism (steadily getting worse), stomach swelling to the size of a monster every time I eat. I just don't know where to begin to take control. My current gyn told me "there's nothing that can be done for me unless I want to go on the pill." I've tried 5 different ones (she knows this) and each time I feel awful... like an out-of-body experience awful. I can't do that. In the meantime I've been trying to use yam cream and started electrolysis (does this work?), but I find myself obsessing and thinking I'm a hypocondriac as my body does all kinds of not-so-friendly stuff. So I guess what I'm looking for is a one-stop cure... but I know I won't find that here (ha!). Seriously though, I'm looking for concrete ways to deal with the missed periods, the bloating (not-weight gain really, just swollen belly), and hirsuitism. That's a lot to ask so if anyone has ANY ideas, please pass 'em on!
