Hi Monica

My experience of the Atkins diet has been quite good - I suppose it does depend on the individual and I'm not as good as I should be - and I could slap myself for that because I know when I'm good the diet works for me.

The Atkins diet is based on low-carbs. You do a 14 day introduction diet which reduces your carbs to only 20g a day (that's basically a 6oz salad) - very low. Most foods have some form of carb in them especially low-fat ones and Atkins tells you what basic foods you can have over the 14 days. This includes meat, fish, cheese, cream, eggs among other things - so it seems a bit strange eating a huge steak with a Greek salad covered in olive oil!!

After the 14 days your body is in Ketosis (using your stored fat for energy instead of carbs) and from now on each week you introduce another 5g of carbs a week into your diet and you'll find out at what stage you don't continue to lose weight and what your tolerance level is.

I lost 9lbs in those 14 days the same amount that I'd lost in 5 weeks doing Herbalife (another American diet product which I later found out was high in carbs). I continued to lose and lost 14lbs in less than a month and within 2 months had lost nearly 2 stone.

When I'm on the diet the main benefit apart from losing weight is that I have so much more energy. I'm still buzzing around the house at 9:30pm doing jobs. I think I'm IR because as soon as I've had something high in sugar ie: Coke or Chocolate/Sweets I need a sleep. I haven't been so good on the diet and the other weekend I had a McD Milkshake and within an hour I was asleep and slept for an hour and a half - I felt so rough but I deserved it, I knew I shouldn't have had it.

Atkins was recommended to me by another PCOS suffer and I'm grateful because I did Herbalife in a desperate measure to lose the weight and it was costing me a fortune. The good thing about Atkins is you don't have to buy special foods - you live off the fat of the land - so to speak. You'll learn quickly what foods are good and what are not so good and to be honest even if I'm not following it strictly I still avoid putting on loads of weight.

I'd recommend giving it ago - anything is worth a try. I've now bought the entire Atkins Answer Pack off of Shop America (they highly recommend it) which consists of videos, cassettes etc. etc. so I intend to give it another "proper" bash.

Hope this helps - if this isn't the answer then I'm sure there's other diets other ladies can recommend.

Let me know what you think.

Hannah
