Re: abdominal painFrom: paula (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 9 Apr 2001 13:06:26 -0500 (CDT)
hi monica, the sharp pains you are experiencing could be one of two things i can think of. if they come on a regular basis, and do not last a horribly long time, it may be ovulation. ovulation occurs when the ovary releases an egg, and it can cause a sharp pain. if the pain is randomly occurring and last longer than 10-15 minutes, than it is probably a bursting cyst. cysts burst and form quite often in a PCOS patient. the pain can range from sharp to dull ache, and last from a few monites to days. i have had ones burst where i was a litle uncomfortable, and i am sure some where i didn't notice, but i have also have had some take me to the emergency room. i hope this helps =) unfortunately there is not much that can be done about cysts bursting, i suppose you could have surgery to remove them, but if the underlying problems that caused them to appear in the first place are still active, than the surgery would only offer yhou a short amount of time without cysts. they would simply form again. your doctor may be willing to prescribe a small dosage pain killer, that might help when it happens. love, paula
