The cysts that woman with PCOS have appear on a ultrasound looking like a strand of pearls there are usually multiple small cysts all lined up like a neclace. Tumors usually appear as just a large or small mass of tissue. Hope this helps a bit..maybe someone can explain it better. and yes it is genetic they are finding it as a defect in chromosome 19 as a defect in the insulin uptake receptors which leads to PCOS.
