What is used as a concrete diagnosis?From: anonymous@obgyn.netFri, 30 Mar 2001 19:27:33 -0600 (CST)
Hello. I am 25 and was very recently diagnosed with Type II diabetes, very mild. I am not on insulin or any medications related to diabetes. My ENTIRE life I have battled: 1. excess hair - I can shave in the morning and have a shadow by n ight fall, and excess hair in places it should not be-,2. since the day I began my menstrual cycle they have been either too frequent, completely missing, or extraordinarily painful, or a combination. 3. I have adult acne, and no matter what I have tried-even antibiotics- it will not go away. 4. In the last two years I have rapidly gained 70 pounds, mainly around my midsection despite the fact that I DO EXERCISE and I eat incredibly healthy foods. The weight just will not come off. 5. My husband and I tried to conceive naturally for three years with no luck. I was diagnosed with diabetes by an endocrinologist who also was the one to first suspect PCOS in me. He took my hormone levels, and although I was not menstruating at the time, my levels were normal but considered to be in the last phase of a menstrual cycle, the luteal phase. I had not had a period for almost two months at that point. I was told that this does not support the diagnoses of PCOS as he had thought. However, my levels were not taken on day 14 of my cycle, obviously because who knows when that will be! I was put on birth control pills and told that this was no big deal, but I am very worried about this. All of my symptoms match exactly. I am very afraid of finding out too late. I have also read other places that measuring hormone levels cannot correctly identify PCOS no matter what, that the diagnoses is mainly based on symptomatology. I have gone to MANY other doctors about this, GYN's, Nurse practitioner's, you name it. I just get the same answer---even if I have it birth control is all that they could do for me. I am at an increased risk for heart disease, as it runs strong in my family, right on down to bio parents. Can someone help me find a doctor who will not push me off like a pain in their side or even help me to distinguish why I have all of these symptoms then? I am very worried about this. Thank you, I really appreciate your help.
