I know exactly what you mean. I'm 31 and when I was told last March (2000) that I had PCOS I don't know how I held it together whilst with the Gyn. I remember getting safely outside the surgery and breaking down. I'd come off the pill in April (1999) with the intention of giving myself a 6 month break before trying for a baby but had only had 3 cycles from the April until the October. I went to my doctors after Christmas who referred me to a Gyn who examined me and told me his initial thoughts were that I had PCOS and that I would have to have a scan to confirm this. I suppose I'd just hoped that the Gyn was going to say go away and lose weight and your periods will comeback and you will have no problems becoming pg - no such luck!

My biggest regret is that I suffered with long gaps between my periods from puberty and I actually went to see my GP when I was 18 because I had gone 7 months and he put it down to a "phantom pregnancy (I'd yet to have intercourse) where my hormones in my head were telling my hormones everywhere else that I was pregnant" - ignorance (his and mine) caused my 10 years of piling on the weight despite joining every diet club going.

I was lucky in that as soon as I got told that I had PCOS last year a friend knew someone else with it and this friend of my friend recommended the Dr Atkins diet. I had started Herbalife because another obese friend of mine had done so well on this but it was no good for me and I took 5 weeks to lose 8lbs - my friend was losing that in a week!! So I bought the book and started the diet and lost 9lbs in the 2 week induction - I stuck to it for 2 months and lost over 2 stone had bags of energy and generally felt good about myself. I've yo-yoed since (I haven't put the weight back on but I'm not as good as I should be and I haven't lost anymore and there's still lots to go) and really need to get back into it - I've not started any drug treatment yet - I go to a herbalist who has helped me have 2 periods after a 14 month gap without one - as you can imagine the sight of my first one was enough to make me cry - the pain was worth it. My visits to her make me feel so much more positive about it all - she's got a history of treating women with PCOS and other fertility problems and she's got time to talk and her speciality is nutrition so that's an added bonus - she's offered me some priceless advice especially about dairy products here in the UK. I chose to see a herbalist because the PCOS self-help group here in the UK - Verity - recommended it - a number of their members have been successful in having children this way.

I've just subscribed to this site this week and already I've learnt so much about the effects of having PCOS. It's lovely to hear the success stories whether it be related to weight, pregnancy or any of the other symptoms and it's reassuring to know you have the voice, experience and understanding of so many women burdened with this syndrome. It's a true lifeline and reading the e-mails each morning is keeping me focused more than ever on my diet and the main aim - a child of my own. Simply - thanks.
