Re: Was Told I had PCOS 1 yr ago Blood work says differntFrom: Christa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 28 Mar 2001 12:18:52 -0600 (CST)
Cindy - I have had severe acne since about 18 yrs old (I had already graduated from high school when it started). I had excessive facial hair on my chin that started around the same time. My periods were very, very painful and heavy. I was finally diagnosed with PCOS after years of seeing and trying to treat the skin problems when I saw an endocrinologist who ordered a sonogram that showed little cysts all around my ovaries. My blood work has recently come back with normal hormone levels too. The only thing that was high was cortisol. I have to get a 24hr urine test done now. I should say I have had other blood work come back with a slightly elevated testosterone level in the past. I think it may have something to do with the day of the month you get the blood work done as hormone levels do not stay the same throughout. My endo says it really doesn't matter when you get them done. I'm actually losing faith in her. Why would I have acne and course, black facial hair on my chin if my hormones weren't out of wack? It's absolutely fascinating. I feel like getting blood taken every single day for a 30-day period and then reading all the results to see exactly what the hell my body is producing and when. Can I do that? I have pretty good health insurance (Aetna US Healthcare). I want some answers!! Now I've been told that elevated cortisol levels could be an indication of Cushings Syndrome. Can PCOS women have elevated levels of cortisol?
