Sarah, I am so sorry to hear this. I know how horrible it can be. In my humble opinion, hirsutism is the worst symptom of pcos. I never had it bad enough to shave my face (although I was getting close about a year ago). I take glcuophage and spironolactone, which you said did not work for you. I am also on diane 35 which isn't available in the U.S. technically, but I got it anyway. I have been on the spiro over a year and it has done wonders for me. I am sorry it didn't work for you. There are a couple of alternatives to spironolactone - one is flutamide. It has different side effects and isn't used as commonly, but often works for this purpose. Do some research on flutamide and then see if it's right for you with your doctor. By the way, most of these agents take at least 6 months to make any difference - did you wait long enough with the spironolactone? The alternative for getting the hair removed permanently is laser hair removal. I am getting that done now. However it is important that you get to the root of the problem first and stabilize it - otherwise you will spend a lot of money for nothing - more hair will grow if you are not treating it properly. I would definitely have the doctor test for adrenal probs, and thyroid probs. Make sure they work hard for you. A solution that might help you out for now is Vaniqa. It is a cream that inhibits hair growth. You shave or use a depilatory (or wax ouch) and then you rub it on - it is supposed to help slow down or eliminate hair growth. You can get a prescription for Vaniqa from your doctor, and some insurances will cover it - others won't. Good luck, keep us updated and feel free to email me.
