Educating a misinformed doctor...SIGH!From: ALicia (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 21 Mar 2001 09:52:33 -0600 (CST)
I saw this site by accident, I was looking up Metformin before taking it. I started two days ago on it. I couldnt believe this when I saw it on this endocronologists site! Talk about blaming the victims! Is there any fairness out there for people who suffer obesity as a sympton of a disease? I wrote this letter and also made a phone call to the number on the website. Of course I had to leave a message. Dear Sir or Madame, I was shocked and dismayed to see such an error promoted on a physician run website. PCOS has been proven to be a metabolic disorder that *causes* obesity. The high androgens lead to further fat storage. I had the first signs of PCOS while still thin when my periods disappeared forever at the age of 21. In fact, I had a major weight gain that went undiagnosed for over 5 years because of weight-prejudiced physicians who sent me home and told me to eat less. I even had a thyroid condition that went untreated for three years. If I had not diagnosed myself with hypothyroidism, Id probably be dead today. That is why I can not let this error on your site go unquestioned. PCOS is a genetic disorder that affects metabolism. Please do further research on this disorder, I think more education in regards to this disease is needed. Fat prejudice is leading to bad science and it almost cost me my very life. This is why I have taken the time to point this matter out to you. Thank you, ******** THE PART IN ERROR********------"Complications of Obesity: Heart attack Diabetes Hypertension High LDL (bad) cholesterol Low HDL (good) cholesterol Gall stones Certain cancers Degenerative arthritis Chronic low back pain Sleep apnea Lung diseases *********Polycystic ovary syndrome" NO!
