Re: Am I I.R. because I'm fat, or am I fat because I'm I.R?From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 11 Mar 2001 13:52:14 -0600 (CST)
Hi Kathy - the quickest answer to your title question is "both." Insulin Resistance certainly makes you more prone to gaining weight. It also causes just what you mentioned, a craving for sugar all the time. But carrying extra fat on your body, in a horrible sort of downward spiral, also causes more weight gain. My understanding of it is this: insulin is like a "key" that lets blood glucose into your cells. When you're IR, your cells don't recognize your insulin so well. So when you eat something, it just goes round and round in your bloodstream a while until your body think hey, obviously don't need this, let's store it. There is more to it than that too, I think having high insulin levels causes problems as far as fat storage as well. Anyway the way to break the cycle is keeping your insulin levels lower. You can do that by dropping the sugar out of your diet. (When you eat sugar, your blood sugar levels "spike," and your pancreas produces a flood of insulin to cope.) Many of us find HUGE success with low carb diets when nothing else ever really worked before, precisely because it address the root of the problem in our metabolisms. Give it a try! You might be pleasantly surprised at the results in your weight and overall health. And really, after the first day or two, those sugar cravings go away (or at least lessen considerably.) I know it sounds impossible but once you get into the thick of it, it's OK!
