Re: Am I I.R. because I'm fat, or am I fat because I'm I.R?From: Zowie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 11 Mar 2001 11:59:49 -0600 (CST)
Hi Kathy, I really don't want to say this, but eating dessert for dinner is really not a good idea, nor is it healthy. You're depriving your body of the necessary nutrients it needs for energy and to function. Eating sugary desserts in place of dinner is NOT a good thing. But to answer your question, as I understand it, we're fat because of our insulin resistance nd this is the basic problem. Our weight is simply a SYMPTOM of our PCOS, not what caused it. We will always have the problem of insulin resistance/sensitivity, this is why it's SO hard for us to lose weight. Personally, I don't really agree with the low carb diets and their generalization of understandings (ex, what you said Atkins Diet claims about being insulin resistant). I'm not saying that low carb diets DON'T work for some, they certainly do. However, PCOS is much more complex than a simple person who just craves and eats carbs and sugars, which causes them to become overweight. I, being hypoglycemic, can NOT do a low carb diet because just the simple slow transition into it made me sicker than a dog and my body just couldn't handle it. I don't really believe that any food is "Bad". However, many women with PCOS do well on the low carb/sugar diets, but it just doesn't work for just as many either. Our bodies are all different, but we must understand that we DIDN'T cause this weight gain, so it really is difficult to LOSE weight by any means because we had no control over it from the start. Those of us who are IR will remain that way to some extent, and it's not our weight that caused it or the PCOS--it's the exact opposite. That's why so many of us get slapped in the face by Dr's saying "lose weight and you'll be fine" when it just isn't that simple. If the diet works for you GREAT!!! :) And continue it if you can, but understand that it won't work for everyone, so don't be tragically upset if it doesn't work out for you. Good luck to you, and I hope you get some reults in whatever you try.
