Hi Emily! Most medical professionals now think that PCOS is caused by (or at the very least related to) problems with your insulin and how your body uses it. Mostly what we are looking at is a condition called "insulin resistance" which is known as a "pre-diabetic" condition. This means that if you have PCOS, it is likely that you have IR as well. And while you may not have diabetes, you are probably at higher risk for it and may have high insulin levels which will need to be taken into account. (Paula just posted a GREAT article she wrote on this, it explains everything, look back a few days and you should see it.) Anyway one of the best tests you need to look at your IR potential is called an IGTT. You fast, then drink a sugary drink, and over a few hours they test your blood sugar AND insulin. The comparison between the two numbers can reveal problems that need to be treated. This physiology is one of the reasons that drugs like Metformin are so successful in treating the symptoms of PCOS, as well as why ow carbing helps reduce the severity of symptoms. (The less carbs you eat, the lower your insulin levels will be.) This is the condensed version, I am certain you will find much more information out there! Please feel free to email me if you can't find enough other info on any of this.
