painful menstruation

My periods are hell. Pain, more pain, heavy bleeding, fainting etc. I would like to know why they are always so painful...whether they come every 2 weeks for 2 weeks or every 8 months for 5 days - how's that for a confused cycle! I used to be told they were so painful because I don't ovualte and the uterus is forcing the endometrium out when it it too thick. This does not make sense when they come every 5 weeks for 8/9 days as they have done recently..any ideas why?

Thank you.
