Re: PCOS, eating disorders, & diet coke & liver functionFrom: Teresa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 28 Feb 2001 18:47:08 -0600 (CST)
My understanding is sugar stimulates the islands of Langerhans. In a woman with PCOS... the alkaloid caffeine (diet coke too) stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce more of its hormones which in turn induce the liver to break down glycogen into glucose via the islands of Langerhans. This puts even a further burden on the islands of Langerhans (which are overly sensitive to begin with). Bad news. This is why a cup of coffee "gives you a lift". Trouble is the islands of Langerhans can NOT distinguish between the effects of caffeine OR eating food (sugar). I guess the the body doesn't know or care WHERE the sugar has come from (the food that is being digested or from previously stored glycogen) It is still broken down by the body's reaction to caffeine. I know that when I've had too much coffee, or diet coke... I'm not just jittery or wide awake...I am headed straight for a hypogycemic fit. Caffeine is bad not to mention all the aspartame (who only knows WHAT that stuff does)!
