stopping diet coke addicitonFrom: jodi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 28 Feb 2001 15:21:53 -0600 (CST)
all right, now i'm glad i threw that one out there because it's nice to see i am not alone in suspecting that diet drinks are bad, bad, bad for those of us with PCOS... and maybe for the rest of the population, as well!!! i do feel better since stopping it. i feel more clearheaded and i have a much easier time waking up in the morning. i used to be the sort that would roll over and go back to sleep without any effort. now, when i'm up, i'm UP. it's very hard for me to fall back asleep. it's also a lot easier for me to GET to sleep at night. even if it had been more than 10 hours since my last caffeine binge, i'd have trouble sleeping. as for the coke/pepsi/whatever's on sale thing... i, too, prefer pepsi. there's this grocery store here that has an "advantage card" and every week either coke or pespi would be on the card... i prefer pepsi but whatever was on the card was what i'd buy. hell of a way to manipulate brand preference, isn't it? giving up the diet coke thing was hard for me... i didn't drink it for the caffeine effect so much as the laxative effect. on my own, i could go 1 or 2 weeks without a bowel movement. things would get backed up and i'd be a walking natural gas source. i drank the stuff more to keep me "regular" than anything. sounds weird, i know... once i went on met, this slow bowel problem went away. that made it MUCH easier to give up the diet pop. it's been a month now since i've had any... and the mere thought of it makes me kind of ill. i'm so happy to be free of that problem!!! (do you have any idea what it's like to be nervous to stay a week at someone's house because you know that without your diet coke every day, you won't poop, and you're gonna have the worst smelling gas imaginable half way through the visit??? this wasn't a bulimic purgative method... this was the only way i could have bowel movements. and i was too embarrassed to tell a doctor this... i feel kinda stupid admitting it here. but i need to point out, that giving it up wasn't all that hard for me because once i was on met, i didn't need it any more.) but if you're looking to give it up, i really think the best way is cold turkey. if you're craving something fizzy, have some seltzer - the fruity smelling, unsweetened kind. drink lots of water... and after a few days, you really won't miss it much any more. i just hope that whatever damage the diet coke has contributed to isn't too irreversible... - jodi
