PCOS, eating disorders, & diet cokeFrom: jodi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 28 Feb 2001 10:48:37 -0600 (CST)
now that i know there are at least two other people here with eating disordered pasts... i want to again bring up the possibility of a relationship... with one other factor. it's been my experience that people with eating disorders put away a significantly greater deal of diet coke (or in my case, diet pepsi...) than the rest of the population. perhaps this is true in the case of ANYONE on a seriously hard to follow diet. i mean, you can consume mass quantities of this stuff... it has no calories... it fills you up... it gives you energy... i was guilty of putting away 2-4 litres of this stuff a DAY for YEARS. if you think cigarettes are an expensive habit, try diet coke. :P (i have, thankfully, finally kicked this habit...) but anyway. on the one hand, i think bulimia plays a big role in worsening the symptoms of PCOS. as to whether or not bulimia brings it on in the first place, i don't know for sure. but i do think it worsens the symptoms. i have a sinking feeling - and have for some time - that consuming huge amounts of diet coke does the same thing. i have read in multiple sources that caffeine raises your insulin levels. i have also read that nutrasweet raises your insulin levels, merely because it is a sweet substance and makes your body think there is a need for insulin. (i am not sure if i buy this one... i like to think your body would be smart enough to figure out a sweet taste from an actual rise in blood sugar... but the possibility exists.) SO. those of you with EDs & ED histories... do you also have a history of diet coke guzzling? even those of you without a history of EDs... since the weight struggle is so prevelent among us, do any of YOU have a history of diet coke guzzling? of black coffee or other caffeine source guzzling, for that matter? i just wonder if there could possibly be a connection between diet coke and PCOS... for what it's worth i know avoid caffeine and nutrasweet COMPLETELY. i might consider trying that splenda stuff some time... but for now i am trying to eliminate funky cehmicals from my diet. - jodi ps - i feel like i ramble too much on this board without contributing anything useful... if anyone else feels the same, feel free to ask me to shut up. :)
