I have the Schwarzbein book. The cookbook is just that, a cookbook, no guidelines so you have to have both books. Her other book explains a lot about insulin, etc. Basically what you will do is figure your activity level and will be able to eat 0-30 grams of carbs per meal (3 meals a day) and 2 snacks 0-15 grams of carbs, again depending on your activity level. It's really kind of like the diabetic model I followed when I had gestational diabetes. You have to count the carbs. She does allow raw carrots as a free food because of the fiber content. But you have to count the carbs in nuts and some other veggies. No bread, tortillas, you know, the manmade stuff. Just whole grains. The vegetarian meals have loads of cheese and eggs, so be prepared! But it does set whole menus, so you don't have to pick and choose, the meal is set up for you if that is the way you want to do it.
