Re: Glucophage and Eating Disorders, Any info out there? From: jodi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 27 Feb 2001 14:20:17 -0600 (CST)
oh lord... i have not seen this warning against bulimics using glucophage. my only guess would be that purging leads to dehydration which could increase the risk of lactic acidosis? that said.bulimia does TERRIBLE things to your body. i am convinced that had i never been bulimic, my PCOS would have never been this bad, if it were even to exist at all. (of course, one could argue, were it not for the insulin problem, i never would have had an eating disorder in the first place... but i digress.) with bulimia, here's what happens. you binge. your body pumps out huge amounts of insulin as a result. maybe you purge, maybe you don't. thiscan affect the blood sugar/insulin balance in your body further. the insulin is thought to be the driving force in the PCOS symptoms. that is why i think the bulimia contributed highly to my PCOS. there have been studies where PCOS is found often in bulimic women due to the crazy insulin swings in their bodies. that said, i am no longer bulimic... have been recovered for some years... but i still have PCOS. i think the years of bulimia set an insulin imbalance in motion that just isn't going to go away on it's own. my hormones were even CRAZIER when i was bulimic. if you are actively bulimic - and you are, otherwise you wouldn't be asking this question - i would honestly say there is NO POINT in addressing the PCOS with glucophage. the glucophage will not be enough to overcome the unnatural insulin swings you are creating in your body bingeing/purging. you need to address the bulimia. afterwards, you may or may not need treatment with glucopahge. most likely, you will... i think that if you are bulimic long enough to cause PCOS symptoms, the insulin problem is not going to just reverse itself when you stop purging. THAT said, howeer, it's still a chicken or egg thing. MAYBE the glucophage will address the insulin probs and HELP you get oveyour bulimia. i don't know. i was recovered well before going on glucophage. but the risk probably lies in dehyrdration issues, and increase chance of lactic acidosis. so you need to stop purging. however, as i said, i don't think the glucophage will work unless you also stop bingeing. binging can basically be thought of as an insulin producing drug... and that would counteract the effects of an insulin sensitizer. it's like taking caffeine and sleeping pills. i assume you ARE in treatment for the bulimia, or else actively working to stop it? i also hope that you are not acitively bulimic and taking the glucophage as part of an attempt at conception. - jodi
