Re: Is METFORMIN worth it?????From: Tracy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 27 Feb 2001 02:17:29 -0600 (CST)
>1. DOES MET CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN? I am in the midhigh 400s I think and I >cannot afford anything that can cause even an iota of weight gain.< I never gained weight on either glucophage or glucophage XR. As a matter of fact, I lose weight on this medication as it totally kills my appetite. Actos increased my appetite and I had to really watch my portions on it.
>2. CAN THIS DRUG MAKE ME A DIABETIC if I am not and if my sugars have Glucophage is an insulin sensitizer. What it does, like Actos and Avandia, is to make the insulin your body produces work better. One can be "insulin resistant" and not diabetic. In fact if you are even slightly insulin resistant, the insulin sensitizing drugs can delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. You should not have a "low" on glucophage. I have had like a total of 4 hypoglycemic episodes on the medication, and all from missing a meal. If you eat regularly you should not have any lows. Not to say lows cannot happen on this drug, they are just not very common if you eat properly and monitor your blood glucose. If you are on ANY drug that affects insulin or blood glucose, you have to have a home monitor and check your blood glucose levels. Especially if you are prone to swings in glucose level.
>3. HOW RARE is that one weird disease acidisois lactos----cant spell Well, I was on the glucophage standard formula for over 2 years and have been on Actos for almost a year. I get tested for the side effects 4X a year and never have had a problem. My diabetes endo. and my reproductive endo. have neither seen a case of this side effect.
>4. ANYONE BEEN ON THIS DRUG AND HATED IT?< Hated the HELL out of Glucophage! Any dose over 500 mg was utter gut wrenching MISERY! 500 mg got to be like a continuous mild case of food poisoning. Cramps and diarrhea all day long.
>5. ANYONE BEEN ON THIS DRUG AND LIKED IT?< Glucophage XR (extended release formula) 500 mg. has caused nary a twinge in the month I have been on it. Actos caused absolutely no side effects either, but was cost-prohibitive in the long term. I reccomend the XR formula, it is gentler to the digestive tract and the gradual release of medication works better if you tend to have frequent lows in blood glucose.
>6. CAN ONE MIX ALDACTONE AND METFORMIN> I LOVE MY ALDACTONE AND WELL IM Been on Aldactone and some form of insulin sensitizer (glucophage, actos, glucophage xr) continuously since late '98. No problems whatsoever. Good Luck, Tracy
