Re: Is METFORMIN worth it?????From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 26 Feb 2001 18:49:53 -0600 (CST)
Hello and congrats on losing a bit of weight! I know you have had quite a struggle so that is really wonderful news. Now then, Metformin! Yes, please do at least consider it.
>1. DOES MET CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN? No, Met does NOT cause weight gain, in fact for many of us with PCOS it helps with weight loss because it can help snap our metabolism back to where it ought to be. I have heard that other insulin sensitizers like Avandia can cause a very small amount of weight gain, but that you do not find this problem with Met.
>insulin. I am NOT diabetic and my fasting insulin was around 23. I I will try and find some links for you... Met will NOT make you a diabetic or hypoglycemic, if you are not already a diabetic. For me (who was severely hypo all the time) it stabilized my blood sugars and they are now normal for the first time in my life. Fasting insulin at 23 still sounds borderline to me (but you'd betetr check that with someone who knows more than me, that is just my first guess) and even a 'normal' insulin reading is possible when you suffer from insulin resistance. It is my experience that Met will help you to use your insulin better and even out your insulin production for better health, no matter which way it has gone before.
>5. ANYONE BEEN ON THIS DRUG AND LIKED IT? I LOVED Metformin, it really gave me my life back. We had a thread about this a while ago, I will try to find it and paste my response back in for you. I also saw many other women in that thread who lvoed Met. I had immediately increased energy and (thank God) the constant hypo attacks stopped the same day. It was the first time in about 10 years I had gone without at least one sugar crash a dya. I became much more happy and friendly, and suddenly had all this energy. My weight dropped a little, although I have to say it didn't go right down. That is probably because I did not low carb at all, in fact my diet was still fairly high in carbs. I started to have a normal menstrual cycle and even got pregnant. My hair which was missing in patches started to grow back in. It was a godsend to me, and I didn't even have any side effects! The worst I have now is a bit of diarrhea first thing in the morning when I don't eat and down a large amoutn of coffee!
>6. CAN ONE MIX ALDACTONE AND METFORMIN> I LOVE MY ALDACTONE AND WELL IM I know quite a few other women ehre who are on both with generally good results. I hope this information helps you out some! Your doctor sounds like he knows what he is doing, I would give the Met a try. If you do, remember it may take several months to see some real effects from it, so don't give up. If you are on it for a while with no benefits or you strart gaining weight or having high blood sugars (which I am almost certain won't happen) then you can always go off it. It's definitely worth a try.
