a paranoid ovulation questionFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netSun, 25 Feb 2001 14:20:37 -0600 (CST)
There is a new book out on Syndrome X and insulin resistance... it has a good section on PCOS. It'a pretty good book and quite cheap, I'd highly recomend it to y'all. :) (It's called Syndrome X : Managing Insulin Resistance by Deborah S. Romaine, et al) HOWEVER... one little tidbit has got me paranoid. It says that in some cases, the repeated formation ond reabsorption of cysts can lead to the follicular damage... making it impossible in the furture for eggs to be released. !!!!!!! So now I have this fear/question... Is it possible to ovulate without releasing an egg??? I know how stupid that sounds. I know that ovulation MEANS releasing eggs. But I guess I wonder if... it's possible for an egg to form... and to TRY to pop out... but to be unable to do it due to structural damage as opposed to haywire hormones like we already have preventing their release? As I understand it... when you ovulate, the egg pops out, and what is left is the corpus luteam (sp) ... and that starts releasing progesterone to thicken the uterine lining, etc, etc... and that progesterone is wwhat is responsible for breat tenderness and other PMS signs... True? So... I ALWAYS have nipple/breast tenderness after ovulation... can that happen without the egg actually popping out like it ought to? Can the corpus luteam form if the egg isn't actually able to break out of it? Can you have all the signs of ovulating but still not really truly be releasing eggs? Has anyone else heard of this, structural damage leading to a physical cause rather than a cehmical cause for preventing ovulation? I hope I havn't made too many people laugh with this question... on the other hand, I hope I haven't made any other hopefuls unduly paranoid, as I am right now. (It's becoming consuming how important this is to me... I am finding this illness to be something that puts so much of life into perspective... ten years ago if you asked me to wish for three things, i would have said "a lot of money, a volkswwagen beetle, and a farm." now, I would say, "I would like to ovulate, i would like a volkswagen beetle, and a farm." I don't think anyone other than you women can understand this...)
