TO BETTY Re: Pure PainFrom: anon (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 23 Feb 2001 17:04:47 -0600 (CST)
Betty- I don't log onto this site often, so I just saw your message today and had to write to you. I'm very familiar with what you experienced. Me--and another woman here in the forum--both have excruciatingly painful "episodes" every 2-3 months, exactly like yours: Terrible pain, nausea, cold sweat, diarrhea, gray-geen skin pallor, and most importantly, dropping blood pressure that causes you to lie there like limp doll while it's all going on. We have both been told by doctors that it is called a "vasovagel response." This refers to that sudden drop in blood pressure that caused you to almost pass out. Both of us have also been told by OB/GYNs that a sudden spike of prostaglandins (a hormone which causes contractions) could be the cause. Their "solution": Take Advil round the clock for several days before every menstrual period. Apparently it inhibits the formation of prostaglandins, and thus should reduce the intensity of the painful contractions. I must admit that it is a far cry from a good solution. AND IT ALSO MAY *NOT* BE WHAT *YOU* HAVE, BETTY. :)) Please, please see your doctor right away: Anything this painful should be checked by a pro ASAP. I just wanted to share my information with you. As for me, I've decided this month that I'm going to get forceful and push my doctor aggressively for a better solution. I think the current OB/GYN standard of saying "It's cramps. Go take Advil" -- thus allowing us to sweat through this agony every 2 months--is sadistic, and I'm not taking it any longer. I also believe that it's incredibly dangerous, since it could easily happen while driving. I'll post any information I receive here for you, Betty. You're in my prayers.
