Just wanted to share this infromation with any others on Avandia. My family doctor put me on avandia in addition to the glucophage i was already taking. My blood sugars were out of control after surgery in Aug/2000. He thought this would help. I should have checked with my endocrinologist. My schedule was very busy and getting an appt w/him seemed difficult. In November I began having episodes of swollen fett, ankles and legs. At first it was minimal. By January they were almost daily and painful. I saw the endocrinolgist 2 days ago. He has taken me off the avandia. He feels there was not enough study of this drug and told me he couldn't tell me what happens after a person is on it for several yrs. Glucophage has been around for 25 yrs. He told me the painful swelling is due to the avandia, and it will take a little while to calm down. I also gained back the 18lbs I had initially lost while on glucohage alone. I am very active. I belong to a gym and do aerobics on a regular basis. Since I have been on Avandia and gained the weight, I intensified my workouts and have only lost 6lbs in 3 months. The swelling in my legs is painful. My period also increased to every 10 to 15 days, leaving me exhausted most the time. My endocrinologist said once I am off the avandia, I should lose the weight again. He is also sending me for liver and kidney tests. For me the glucophage was working fine, I had simply had trouble after my surgery with an infection.
