Hi Lori, I have been a registered dental assistant in California for 12 years I have worked with many patients with TMD (temporal mandibular disorder the J=joint in TMJ) I too think it is somewhat related to hormones in woman but more oftenly is caused from STRESS and clenching and grinding of teeth. Braces can help with the alignment of your jaws hence help with the joint..but be careful orthodontics can also make it worse. I had braces to correct my TMD and has been 5 years and so far no reoccurance of pain in my jaws. But I do notice when I am really stressed out I tend to clench and grind which can cause damage to the joint. So I wear an Occlusal night gaurd to keep my mouth open or in the Relaxed position which is less tension on the joints and also helps protect my teeth from the wear of grinding. Also take note that being over wieght is a Major cause of sleep apnea in woman they make occlusal night guards that can also help with apnea. I would try one of these night gaurds if you already haven't or discuss this with you orthodontist before being banded.May save you alot of time and money in the long run. Also I have referred patients in the past for biofeedback therapy to teach people how to realax there muscles. The Masseter muscle being the facial muscle that tenses up and causes alot of TMJ problems. Bye the way I had braces because my miniscus disk (the cartliage) had slipped out of position and was causing arthritic type pain. braces was an alternative to surgery for me and it worked. I hope I was helpful feel free to e mail if you have any questions. Sorry about my spelling...it's really bad..lol. Take care,Dona >
