Re: Any new info on PCOS?

Researchers are thinking that PCOS is a "side illness" if Insulin Resistance (and yes they think this applies to those patients who are not currently manifesting the symptoms or test results of IR, they think that it is an eventuality with poor control). they are starting to believe it is connected to a genetic "mutation" or damage to a gene on chromosome 19. this gene sits right next to a gene for insulin reuptake. it is hypothisized that this causes a "misreading" in the code leading to a slightly different type of insulin being produced. (kinda like only one amino acid is different between normal insulin and insulin produced by a PCOS patient...im not saying that is the particular case, but it is like that...only a minor difference, but enough to throw off the body). apparently this causes a "cascade" effect in some patients causing their other hormones to respond strangely and either over or under produce. it is unlikely that isolating this gene will be beneifical in a direct sense because insulin is a chemical that is found all over the body, but if we can code for the exact sequence of this "string" of nucleotides, and we can pinpoint the differences between "normal" insulin and the insulin produced by people with this disease, it may be possible to produce a medication that either converts the insulin to normal insulin or tells our bodies this type of insulin is ok. (kinda like an insulin sensitizer, but more specific, which in theory would produce better results). the exact mechanisms are sketchy at best right now, but this seems to be the prevailing theory. there is also much research into other treatments and causes, this seems to just be the most likely at this point.

(wow, i hope that mase sense=) love, paula
