Re: Misconceptions: Some thoughts...long

Since the summer when I was 12 and gained 30lbs in a matter of weeks I've known that I don't process food like other people. I always felt 'cursed.' I knew it was possible for me to gain 10lbs in a week without really going overboard with the eating. It wasn't until I was 26 and 'officially' diagnosed with PCOS that I was able to read enough about my particular type of metabolism and understand that the high-carb low-fat way of eating (that most young women live by) was the worst thing I could be doing. Since then I've lost all the weight (and yes, it was very hard and frustrating.) But it is worth it. Now I've maintained for 3 years by 1) staying informed on how carbs affect my body 2) keeping a food jounal (I write down absolutely everything I eat every day, three years and counting) 3) getting regular aerobic exercise (2 or 3x a week) 4) limiting sugar in all forms (the first 10 weeks of my new way of eating I didn't eat a single molecule of sugar. I credit this with finally breaking the sugar/carb craving cycle. It's much easier to have willpower when your body isn't driving you crazy with cravings. Also, eating a healthy amount of good fat keeps the insulin in check and limits cravings.) We can actually be healthier than other people by eating in a PCOS friendly way. No one really need refined carbs, sodas and white bread. When I see what my friends eat I realize that just because they don't have a metabolic problem and don't gain weight doesn't mean they are healthy. I think we have to put health first. And my body feels healthy and the way it's supposed to be at the lower weight. I used to think it was 'unnatural' for me to be thin. After all, my body was doing everything in its power to make me fat. Now I realize it's all a matter of rejecting the popular diet and refined packaged foods in America and finding out for yourself what is healthy and keeps our particular metabolism in check. Losing weight and gaining control is worth it on its own even if it doesn't help with the other symptoms.
