Twenty years ago I had "the surgery" accidentally--before I knew anything at all about PCOS. I went into the hospital for removal of a huge ovarian cyst and while the doctor was in there he noticed a string of small cysts on the opposite ovary so they removed the huge cyst and performed a wedge resection on the other ovary. I subsequently had two children, one two years post surgery and one fifteen years post surgery. During the past ten years I've been gaining weight (50 pounds so far), losing hair on my head, and developing facial hair at an alarming rate. In the past year I've miscarried two babies. At my mom's urging I went to a doctor in Richmond who's doing PCOS research, long story short here, he ran tests, they came back normal, he ran them again, some came back abnormal. It turns out that the surgery I had in 1980 is effective for 10-15 years and the effect is wearing off, hence the marked difference in test results. In my case the surgery was effective in warding off the symptoms and effects (weight gain, hair loss, excess body hair, and infertility) of PCOS for fifteen years.
