What exactly are the right steps to take after being diagnosed? From: CureMeFast (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 9 Jan 2001 01:40:27 -0600 (CST)
Hi, I recently discovered this group and have been reading the posts here for the last 2 days. The info here is great! Last week I was confirmed to have PCOS. My gyno(a nurse practitioner since appts with an actual doctor would take me more than 3 months!!) has prescribed Provera 10mg taken twice a day for 5 days and said I should hv my periods in 2 weeks or earlier. (I havent had my periods since Nov 99) She then wants me to take the BCP Desogen until I decide I want to get pregnant at which point I will be given Chlomid so that I ovulate. I am 24 and me and my husband are thinking of trying to have kids starting July 2002. But I want to get completely back to normal before we start trying and so wanted to get a head start in getting my body under control. I want to fight this out and not ignore it. For yrs I hv had irregular periods and all of my ob/gyns have completely dismissed it saying its very common and nothing to be worried abt. Some even went to the extent of saying I should hv no problems conceiving, something I know is not true after reading the posts here. One gyno said I may have PCOS but even if I did it doesnt matter cuz thers no cure for it...its just a condition. I belived this cuz I didnt know any better and was too young to be worried abt infertility. I would love to get some advice so that I know exactly what I should do from here on. I am thinking of going for my physical to my PCP sometime next week. I currently have very bad dizzy spells at lunch time and then again at 4pm. So what exactly should I tell her? How do I go abt asking to be referred to an endo. Can she prescribe Met or do i need to go a specialist. I have gained 30 lbs in the past yr....getting more hairier on the jawline, chin, chest and belly. I havent lost hair yet and dont hv acne. But the dizzy spells I get are really bad. When I did research on Provera, I found out it was the same as Depo. I called my ob/gyn and she said it will not have the same effects as Depo cuz its a much lower dose. I also suggested that I might hv IR since I hv dizzy spells. She told me that IR is the opposite of low blood sugar which is probably what I have. She said my insulin and dizzy spells have nothing to do with my periods and they are completely unrelated. Its like comparing apples and oranges or like a cold and pneumonia...whatver that means!!!!!!! I want to educate her but dont know the right way to do it. This is the first time I went to her (I change docs a lot cuz they all prescribe BCP and i know that I DONT want to take them) I dunno if I should change. Shes my fourth and they've all brushed it off so far. She is th only one who actually sat with me and discussed my blood work results(I hv high testostrone and low progestron). The others were just too busy and mailed my results saying everything was normal. So should I take the Provera just to have a period and then start treatment with Met and a low carb diet with exercise ? Or should I forget abt the Provera all together. As for the BCP, I dont want to take that so I hv no doubts abt that one. Sorry for making this long and thanks so much for letting me rant. I just needed to get it out of my system. Any advice would me much appreciated. Thanks again...... Paula
